Barley Grass
What is it?
Barley grass is the young grass of the plant barley. It is filled with carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, mineral oils and fiber. The fiber in barley grass is thought to help lower cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar levels and help with digestive conditions like inflammatory bowel disease. It slows stomach emptying giving a full sensation and hence helps lose weight.
It is available in powder and pill form in major pharmacies.
Benefits
Researches have shown that barley grass reduce total cholesterol, bad cholesterols (LDL & Triglycerides) and increase good cholesterol HDL. Studies also have proven that it helps reduce blood pressure in people with hypertension. Because of its benefits in people with hypertension and hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol) it helps in reducing the risk of heart diseases.
Some study finds it helpful to prevent stomach cancer but not other cancers. There is insufficient researches to suggest it helps with weight loss, bronchitis, diarrhea and boosting strength & energy.
Possible side effects
Barley grass is generally safe to take for most people. Asthmatic patients may find the powder form may induce hypersensitivity to the lungs.
There is insufficient evidence to prove if it is safe for lactating/pregnant women to consume it, hence it is best to avoid. People with celiac disease should avoid it as its fiber may make symptoms worse.
Drug-drug interactions
1.Diabetic medications: As Barley Grass can lower blood sugar level so when used concurrently with diabetic medications may cause hypoglycemia (blood sugar level being lower than normal range) resulting in symptoms like jittery, tremors, sweating , dizziness, fainting spells and weakness.
2.Other Medications: Barley grass fiber may reduce the absorption of other medications hence it should not be taken together with other medications as it may reduce the medicine’s effectiveness. It should be spaced few hours apart from medication intake.
